London – Wiltons and Mama Mia

Wiltons London

I’m sure I have said this before but one of my favourite things to do when I go home is to go to dinner and then see a show! My family booked Mama Mia for the 7:45pm show and for dinner before I had booked Wiltons in London. When looking for a restaurant I wanted something that was old and had character. I have been to Rules a few times and wanted something similar.

When researching old restaurants in London I stumbled across Wiltons. It started as a shellfish-mongers in 1742 and evolved into the restaurant it is today. You should check out its history here! It is quite interesting. It even tells you why the waitress dress like ‘nannies’!

I booked the earliest reservation they had so that we would not be rushed getting to Mama Mia. We got there at 5:30pm after walking through Fortnum & Mason (great place for tea) and then looking in a few of the shop windows nearby. Wiltons is tucked away on Jermyn Street amongst haberdasheries (for those in the USA)/men’s stores (for those in England) that have been there many years.

After taking our coats and seating us we were greeted with a glass of complimentary champagne (I’m not sure if this was because I booked online) but it was wonderful champagne. The server asked if we were going to a show and we told him yes and what time it started. They said they would make sure that we were on the way to the show by a few minutes after 7pm!

We started with bread and butter. The bread was great and I am told the butter (from Devon) was out of this world by my sister (I am not a fan of butter). Catherine and I ordered aperitifs (dirty martini and whisky sour) before taking a good look at the menu!

I settled on getting a dessert instead of a starter and after that was cleared up I looked at the mains to decide what to have.

I decided on cod on a bed of spinach with mini brown prawns on top. Catherine copied with the same. My mum went for wild mushroom risotto and my dad the West Country beef filet. For the table we shared some celeriac puree, chips (highly recommended; so crunchy on the outside), and green beans.

They do have a serving trolley if that is more your thing.

For dessert Catherine and I each had the Amedei chocolate fondant peanut and caramel and my mum had the Crème brule.

Mine was hands down one of the best desserts I have ever had!

We couldn’t’t leave without a good bathroom selfie!

Mama Mia

After dinner (and in perfect time) we caught a black cab to take us to the Novello Theater for Mama Mia. It is only about a 5-7 minute cab drive.

If you have not seen Mama Mia and are in London (and like ABBA) I cannot recommend it enough! It was AMAZING! I have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat for a week now! By the end of the show you will be out of your seat and dancing! It was such a fun day/night!

After, we strolled back to Waterloo to get the train home.

Wiltons has shot to the top of my favourite restaurants lists and I would hands down go see Mama Mia again! They also currently have a show/dinner of Mama Mia at the O2. I have not been but my sister went two days later and said it was great!

Have you seen either of the Mama Mia shows in London?
