Museums in Washington D.C.

We only had about 4 days in Washington D.C. You can see here some of the other things we got up to. Here is a roundup of the rest. This post covers mainly the museums we went to visit. There are a lot of them and each one you can spend hours, probably even days in. Again, all of them were free! Some you just have to reserve a time to enter and that can easily be done online.

Natural History Museum

The day we landed was cold and rainy so after dropping our stuff at the hotel we headed straight for the Natural history Museum. There was a lot to see including a Hall of Mammals, a butterfly Pavilion, and a Bone Hall to name just a few.

White house

You cannot travel to Washington D.C. and not stop to see The White house at least once! You can actually request tours through your member of Congress. I wish we had thought to do this. If you plan to try and get a tour make sure you look at how far in advance you need to put in the request. I think when I looked it was about 30 days!

National Zoo

We decided that one of the days with nice weather we would stop by the Zoo. I think we actually got there a bit early because not a lot was out in the morning. Maybe if the weather is warmer, early would be good, but if you go when it is cold I would recommend getting there a little later. We stopped at a Pret a Manger before and got some sandwiches to have for lunch while we were in there. Even around lunch it wasn’t very busy. It picked up in the afternoon.

American History Museum

The American history Museum was really interesting! You can see the original American flag and many of the first Ladies’ Dresses and china! I was also hoping to see Dorothy’s red slippers but they were on loan to a museum in London at the time.

Embassy Row

This is something slightly different that was recommended by my sister. I think we were coming back from the zoo and that is why we were somewhat in the area. If you have time and want a good walk – walk by all the Embassies. The area is known as Embassy Row and is located along Massachusetts Avenue. I thought it was so interesting to see all the Embassies and how they were decorated and designed. The one for England even had a red telephone booth outside. The whole thing was massive!

National Archives

Lastly, we couldn’t not stop by the National Archives to see America’s Founding documents!

We also walked past the F.B.I. building!

Overall, we saw a lot and it was a nice, quick 4 day trip to Washington D.C. If you like museums it is definitely the place for you. I think Hector and I still prefer off the beaten path, away from the city trips, but I loved seeing all the History Washington had to offer!
