The Washington Monument and more…

I have mentioned there is A LOT to do in Washington D.C.. Here are a few other things we got up to. They are probably some of the bigs ones on your list if you plan on going. Hopefully, it will provide you with a bit more information. First up the Washington Monument!

Washington Monument

One thing I would book in advance if you want to see it is the Washington monument. I didn’t actually realize you could still go up it! When we looked to book it while we were there it was all booked up. They told us at the monument that some tickets are held back and you can book 24 hours in advance. You just have to get online a few minutes before 10 AM and be ready! Or you can go the same day and see if you can snag tickets. They open at 8.45 AM but I’m told people line up way before that. Tickets are free but if you book online there is a $1 processing fee. I think this was the only thing we paid to do while there!

We showed up about 30 minutes before our reserved time. The line is outside and not covered so be prepared if it is cold or rainy. It was very cold and windy while we were there. Also, make sure you don’t have anything you can’t take in. I had nail clippers and was not allowed to take them in, so I had to leave them outside on the grass. I just went and got them when we were done.

The little room at the top is very small and cramped but the views are amazing! You can see everything! More information on the monument ca be found here.

Library of Congress

Another thing to book in advance (or you can try for same day) is the Library of Congress. This we did the day before with no problem at all. It just reserves you a time to enter and once in there you make your way around yourself. Make sure to look up! The ceiling is amazing! We actually spent quite a bit of time here because there are some different exhibitions you can stop and see. See what they have going on here.

Lincoln Memorial

Any finally, do not to miss the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial! I couldn’t find any good public transport (I only really looked up the metro) that would take you close to this but there might be a bus and there is always Uber. It was a bit of a walk from our hotel but nothing too crazy. We walked over pretty early to try and beat the crowds. This whole memorial feels so much larger in person. I am so glad we got to see it.

There is so much to see in this area – plan to spend some time there. We also got to see the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial and the World War II Memorial! I also wanted to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and the Martin Luther King Memorial but we just ran out of time. It gives us a reason to go back! More information can be found here.

I haven’t even touched on the (Smithsonian) museums. We only got to see a few but they were very interesting! Check back to see the ones we saw. My previous post on Washington D.C. can be found here.
