Colombia: The Lost City Trek/Ciudad Perdida Pt. 2 What to Pack

I did a lot of research about what to pack before I left but I wanted to add my 2 cents to what is out there. I was mainly unsure about the sleeping situation and so I will touch on that as well.

Since you have to carry everything I would recommend to pack as light as possible!

Clothes (including what I wore the first day):

  • 3 pairs of trousers (1 pair of work out leggings, 1 pair loose trousers, 1 pair to sleep in/walk around camp in)
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 3 tops (2 for walking and 1 for camp/sleep)
  • 4 pairs of socks
  • 2 sports bras
  • 1 light long sleeve top
  • Swimsuit
  • 4 pairs underware
  • Hiking boots
  • Sandals (I brought ones I could hike in/cross rivers in. They were nice to have but flip flops would have done because I mainly used them around camp. The river was low when I went. If you go when the river is high you may want some you can hike in so you can cross in them instead of your hiking boots/no shoes)

Hector essentially brought the same clothes. The only thing he changed was one less pair of trousers and no sports bras lol!

Other:

  • Sleeping bag (I brought this but did not need this – I will talk about that more below)
  • 1stAid Kit (blister plasters, ibuprofen, bandages/plasters, alcohol swabs, dehydration salts)
  • Medication (I took malaria tablets)
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • 2-3 water bottles
  • Quick dry towel
  • Tooth brush
  • Tooth paste
  • Shampoo/Conditioner (I took these to save on the weight)
  • face wipes
  • Baseball cap (I didn’t end up wearing it)
  • Torch/headlamp/flashlight
  • Toilet paper (while the camps had some in the kitchen area to grab I liked bringing my own!)
  • Dry bag (didn’t need but we didn’t have any rain – check the weather before you leave!)
  • Contacts
  • Sunglasses
  • Plastic bag (for dirty clothes)
  • Snacks? (They give you plenty to eat on the trek but if you want extra)

Electronics/Camera/film gear (if that’s your thing):

  • Camera
  • Spare battery (I didn’t need one but it depends how long yours lasts)
  • GoPro and case (I keep mine in one)
  • GoPro spare battery (I didn’t end up needing this)
  • Selfie stick (for the GoPro)
  • Water float stick for the GoPro (if you want to get in the water with it)
  • Portable Charger
  • Phone (I didn’t use mine the entire trip – however I did see WiFi advertised for a small fee)
  • Spare SD cards (depending how many pictures/videos you want to take)

It sounds like a lot but clothing-wise it is actually very little. As for equipment/Camera stuff, if you are traveling with someone or a group just split up the load. Alternatively you could hope that another member of the group is bringing a camera and is nice enough to share their pictures. There were a group of 5 friends on the trip with us that didn’t bring one and on the last day one of the girls asked if I minded sending her the pictures. I gave her my email and a couple of weeks later she emailed me with a link to a website similar to Dropbox. I went through the pictures and added all the ones with her/her friends in them plus the scenery ones so she would have them.

Backpack (I found mine online for under $100 on this site)

Lastly, I want to go back to the sleeping situation. When I was researching what to pack I could not find much on whether we would need a sleeping bag or not. I found one website that mentioned bringing one because the beds might not be that clean. Every other site had no mention of one. I have a very small one so decided to pack it just in case, but I didn’t end up needing it, all the camps had clean sheets and blankets. In fact, many camps we passed had the sheets and blankets hanging out to dry from being washed. Hector and I even debated leaving my sleeping bag at the 1st camp to pick up on the way back but decided against it in case it ‘got lost’.

I have heard in the high season sleeping arrangements can change. I saw a lot of hammocks so if the camp bunk beds are full and your group is one of the last to arrive you may end up in a hammock (whether that is good or bad is up for you to decide). You may want a sleeping bag then since I do not know if a blanket is provided. I would think if you ask for a blanket they would give you one…

I hope this helps! Leave any questions you have below and I will make sure to answer them!

Stay tuned for Day 1 of the hike.

Lots of Love,

Buffy xx
