Vatnajökull Ice Cave & Glacier Hike in Iceland

Those of you up for a 5 hours drive to the South of Iceland I’ve got just the activity for you! Book a Vatnajökull Glacier hike and Ice cave tour. The views are spectacular!

We had a 1pm tour booked so we set off fairly early to make sure we arrived on time. I recommend getting there 15-30 minutes early so you have time to get ready for the hike. When we arrived there was a group that got there right when their hike was set to start and the tour left without them. It was because they were not going to have time to set up properly with all their gear. I’ll explain a little bit more about this now.

When you get to the office and after you have signed your life away they check what type of boots you are wearing. If they do not properly support your ankles they will provide you with some that do. From there, you head outside to be fitted with crampons and a helmet. They also give you an ice pic!

Once you have all the gear you load up on the bus and are ready to go! The bus ride to the glacier is only about 15 minutes. Once you arrive you hike for a few minutes and then attach your crampons. Then you are all ready to go. The hike up to the ice cave is pretty easy, you just have to make sure you dig your feet in so you don’t slide around. There is a lot of time to stop and take pictures and just take in the scenery and if you are lucky you may see some wildlife.

They even show you where to take pictures to make it look like you climbed a glacier wall!

Here are some behind the scenes…lol.

We got back late into Reykajvik and decided to get a quick bite to eat before going back to the hotel.

Kebabs in Iceland anyone?

Lots of Love,
