Colombia: The Lost City Trek/Ciudad Perdida Pt. 1

I had never heard of The Lost City Trek in Colombia until a few months before I booked a trip to it. At the beginning of the year I knew I wanted to go somewhere in February but was unsure where. Macho Picchu/Inca Trail has been on my list for as long as I can remember and I decided ‘why not’ and looked into finally planning it. Well, that was quickly shut down when I realized that the Inca Trail is closed the month of February. After that realization I started doing some research and stumbled on The Lost City Trek in Colombia.

The only thing I really knew about Colombia was how dangerous it was meant to be. However, after more research and talking to a friend who had recently been there, I was learning that while many people still held that perspective; a lot had changed over the years. Don’t get me wrong, you still have to be careful but that goes for wherever you travel!

I read more about the trek; first I discovered that it is a 4 day jungle trek to an indigenous site that is 650 years older that Manchu Picchu! On top of that it sees A LOT less visitors each year, although it is becoming more well-known! I thought “there is no time like the present!”. I even pushed the trip back a few days a bit so that I could be trekking on my birthday!

The plan was to fly into Santa Marta early in the morning and have the day to walk around the city and also get ready for the hike. Hector and I were scheduled to leave early on the second morning for the hike. I researched a couple of different tour companies and ended up going with Magic Tour.

I was leaning towards Wiwa tour because you have an indigenous guide. However, I could not tell if the company stored your luggage for you. That was an important things for us. We did not want to have to worry about finding a place to store it or even having to get a hotel room to keep it in. On top of that, on the hike you have to carry everything you bring. We did not want to carry extra items we would not be using! Magic Tour did not disappoint! I would highly recommend them! After the trek we would have a couple of days in Santa Marta/at the beach/National park. I would have changed how we ended the trip so stay tuned for that!

Up next: what to pack for the trek!
