Seaplane – Seeing Seattle from Above

Seaplane

So, do y’all remember in my last post I mentioned seeing a small seaplane fly by when I was up the Space Needle? Well, it made me look more into whether ‘seeing Seattle from above’ was possible! I do realise that this post won’t be for everyone, so I’ll keep it somewhat brief – but I love flying, and small planes! On top of that I’ve never been in a sealant…

If you follow me on instagram (here), you’ll have seen that a while ago I was actually taking flying lessons, which I am hoping to start up again in the future. So once I saw that small plane from the Space Needle (pevious post here), I started researching the different companies that provide such tours. I ended up going with ‘Seattle Seaplanes’ because they left from Lake Union as opposed to Lake Washington (that location was easier for me because I was taking an Uber).

So when I was trying to book I found the easiest way was just to call, as opposed to their online booking system. I didn’t have much luck trying to book online, probably because I was booking last minute and only had one available day. It was really easy to book over the phone and they took payment at the same time. I decided to go with a group since it was a bit cheaper, plus the planes are really small, meaning a ‘group’ would only be three or four people plus the pilot!

On the day:

You obviously have to sign all the regular forms when you get there. After that they take you to a map and show you everything you will be flying over. I actually lucked out – I was scheduled to go with two others, and they never turned up! They offered the two spots to my parents, free of charge, since they had already been paid for! However, my parents politely declined because they do not like small planes, so I ended up with a private flight!

Then we set off! It’s crazy because there is no designated runway on the lake – just whatever space the pilot can find. As Seattle was having a heatwave at the time there were so many boaters and kayakers out, but the pilot managed to find a spot and we made it up! I got to go all over Seattle, seeing the University, the stadiums, Bill Gates’ house (not sure you can call it a house – it is so big, I believe 66,000 sq. feet!), the Space Needle, and one of my favourites – all the house boats! The whole fight took about 20-25 minutes, and if you have time (and like planes) it’s a great way to see Seattle!
