Limoni Cafe and Restaurant

Limoni was recommended to us by Tony (Riad owner). He said it was a nice place to eat and close by, that sounded perfect for our first night! One of the staff booked us a table for that evening and showed us where it was on the map. It was about a 10 minute walk to Limoni. It was noticeably different walking around at night, many of the streets are very narrow and windy which makes for an intriguing walk.

When you arrive at the restaurant it doesn’t look like much. You enter and are in a small entrance way with a curtain all around. Once you step through the curtain you are in an open courtyard (with the roof closed off) and surround by orange and lemon trees (and tables). It was beautiful inside!

I think I mentioned in my last post that we came here twice. To start, Limoni has the best bread! Second, this restaurant serves both Moroccan and Italian food (interesting mix) so the first time I went I ordered tagine (traditional Moroccan food) and the second time I got Italian! I’ll tell you a little about each!

I ordered the Tagine di manzo makfoul pomodori e cipolle caramellate (beef tagine makfoul with tomatoes and caramelized onions) the first night. It also came with a side of couscous. The second time we ate there I got the pesto tagliatelle. Both were very good. I think when I ordered the pasta I was a bit tagined out. While I liked the tagine I just didn’t want to keep eating it multiple nights in a row. For dessert (there is always room), I had the fondant al cioccolato, it was so good, I had it both nights!

Now Morocco is a Muslim country and so there are very few places you can buy alcohol!  None of the restaurants (or supermarket) we went to sold alcohol. There are a few restaurants that do serve alcohol, but you would have the check menus to find out which ones…or ask wherever you are staying if they know. A lot of places will serve nonalcoholic cocktails and beer (some may question the point…). I had a fresh squeezed lemon and mint drink at Limoni the second time I was there. I felt it was fitting since I was sitting among lemon trees! It was very tart! I think I should have mashed the mint leaves in some to help with the tartness. Either way it was still good!

On our second visit there, towards the end of the evening, we were reminiscing about the day trip we had taken to the mountains and a waterfall we had got to visit, when they brought around lemoncello digestifs (they were free – I think that was why they could give them to us). It was a nice end to a great dinner.  Make sure to check back soon because that was when we realized we had gone to a completely different waterfall than we thought! More on that in my next post!
