Kayaking at Sandy Creek Park

My friend Hannah and I have talked about driving out to Sandy Creek Park and renting either a Canoe or Kayak for a couple of weeks now. This past weekend we finally made it over there to go kayaking! If you are looking for something fun and cheap to do around Athens I would definitely recommend heading that way.

The past weekend was slightly overcast making it a perfect day for Kayaking (for us). It meant we didn’t have the sun beating down on us – especially since when we rented the kayak they told us we were not allowed to get in/swim in the water. We arrived at the park around noon, parked and walked down to the rental area. We couldn’t decide between a kayak or a canoe. However, we finally settled on a 2 person kayak. It is only $5 for an hour! After getting our life-vests (mandatory) and paddles we walked to the water’s edge to get our kayak. I have a dry bag I got as a gift from my friend Lynne. We strapped that in the front of the kayak, had our water bottles beside us and we were off!

It is quite hard work paddling but lots of fun at the same time! We paddled into the center of the lake and around for a bit before heading back in. We had lunch plans at Cali n’ Tito’s otherwise I think we would have stayed out longer. On the way to Cali n’ Tito’s we did say that we wanted to go back and next time we would try a canoe and also bring a picnic to eat out on the lake.

After lunch we did a bit of shopping before driving back to mine for a quick workout in my ‘in progress’ home (garage) gym.

If you live in the Athens area and are interested in kayaking/canoeing (I also read they have paddle boards – but I didn’t see any) make sure to check it out before Labor Day! After Labor Day the season finishes – unless you bring your own (I think)!

Lots of Love,
