Foundation is one of my favourite parts of doing my make up (don’t get me wrong eye make up and contouring are also a favourite) but it achieving that flawless base just makes such a huge difference in the entire look. I do like to splurge a little bit on my foundations and find that I can get a better colour match by going to a department store than guessing in a drug store. I do think drug stores have some great foundations however the ones below are just some that I have found work best for my normal-combination skin.
Vitalumière Aqua by Chanel
I love this foundation and am already on my second bottle! I wear it in 20 beige. It is so light and comfortable on the skin it doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything (it does need to be shaken well before). It gives your skin a nice satin finish and also lasts throughout the day (only after about 8 hours do I need to powder!!), it can also be layered so you can get your desired coverage. This foundation also has a SPF 15. This is nice because it helps protect your skin from sun damage, which is so important but often forgotten. One last thing – even though the packaging is not as spiffy and grand as one might expect from Chanel it is great if you are traveling; you do not have to worry about packing a large glass bottle.
Something to note: those of you who like a fragrance free foundation will probably not be a big fan of this foundation since it is heavily scented.
It retails for $45.
Perfection Lumière Velvet by Chanel
Perfection Lumière Velvet
Another great foundation by Chanel! I tried this one because I loved the Vitalumière Aqua. I found this foundation very similar to the Vitalumière Aqua except that it gives a matte finish and that it was a little bit thicker. I wear this one in 22 beige rose which has a little bit more pink to it than the 20 beige I wear in the Vitalumière Aqua.
Note: Also scented like the one above.
It retails for $45.
Sheer Glow by Nars
I have been wearing this foundation for a couple of years now. I wear the colour Ceylan. It is a sheer foundation that can be built up to a medium coverage and leaves a semi matte finish on the skin. Similar to the Vitalumière Aqua by Chanel, it also feels very light on the skin. I don’t feel it wears as long as the 2 foundations above but the finish it gives warrants a place on my list.
One thing to note is that it does not come with a pump so you have to pour it out. You can buy a pump for it, but for its price point if I ran Nars I would include a pump!
It retails for $45.
Open Sheer Glow
Double Wear Light by Estee Lauder
Double Wear Light
I love this foundation because it is long wearing! It provides sheer-medium coverage that sets very quickly to a matte finish, however you must be fast when working this into the skin. I don’t build this foundation as I find one layer is enough. A big bonus is that I do not have to powder later on in the day. I like that it comes in a squeeze bottle as it helps with the messiness. It doesn’t have a SPF in it so you need to make sure your moisturizer does, or that you are applying a sunscreen before so that you are protected!
It retails for $37.
Skin Base by Illamasqua
This is the only full coverage foundation on my list and it can be hard to work with at first but it is great once you master it! You have to make sure that it is really worked into the skin and a little goes a long way! I wear this foundation when I need a little more coverage, it gives a nice matte finish and also photographs really well (obliviously important for the oh so many photo-shoots I do – haha) I don’t find that I have a cakey finish at all with this foundation – not a good look! Also it has a great shade range.
It retails for $42.
